    Coils may be deployed as an adjunct for aneurysms or prevent distal embolization of Onyx or NBCA during deployment while the material is still liquid. Historically, polyvinyl alcohol has been used but was noted to have a propensity to recanalize or embolize to the lung and is not commonly used (Standard et al., 1995; Sorimachi et al., 1999; Morris, 2013). Onyx is a mixture of EVOH and tantalum dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) that is paste-like in consistency.

    The particles cause a temporary occlusion, which results in vessel thrombosis. This thrombus is subsequently broken down so that there is a relatively high recanalization rate when using PVA [36]. Histopathologic studies of NBCA demonstrate that cyanoacrylate provokes a more intense inflammatory reaction than that caused by PVA and involves the wall of the vessel and the adjacent interstitial areas [37–41].
