The risk of VTE is approximately 4-fold higher after spontaneous ICH compared to acute ischemic stroke [2,27]. However, incidence rates of VTE after ICH vary widely across studies based on study design (retrospective vs prospective), diagnostic strategies for VTE assessment (systematic surveillance vs reporting of symptomatic events), patient-related characteristics (mainly the severity of ICH) and the use of mechanical or pharmacological antithrombotic prophylaxis [28].
